ASTM A179 tubes are manufactured using seamless cold-drawing processes 510. For precision tubes like those potentially used for fin applications, manufacturers employ:

  • Multi-pass mild cold drawing with total deformation ≤25% to avoid work hardening.
  • Controlled temperature heat treatment at 620–660°C with temperature fluctuations ≤±5°C to eliminate cold drawing stresses.
  • Segmental tension straightening for long-length tubes (e.g., 15m) with residual stress ≤10MPa.
  • Advanced surface treatments including acid pickling + passivation to achieve surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.8μm 1, with optional phosphating (2–3g/m² coating weight) for enhanced corrosion resistance.
